FIFA Best Women’s Coach Viz, Part Two

In continuation of part one of the FIFA Best Women’s Coach voting exploration, I’ve stretched out the data set a bit further.

This viz takes a more detailed look at the voting patterns within the original data set. Part One goes over my first attempt at wrangling the data; it focuses on slicing the nominations and winners by different categorizations.

FIFA coach - Detailed Voting Viz

This viz has four separate tabs, each drilling in on a different aspect of the voting results. Filters are added where possible s you can construct your own view. Additional information on each tab is provided below.

Use the expand button in the bottom right of the viz to open a full screen view.

Voting Year by Year

This first chart represents all the coaches on the nominee long list each year and how they ranked according to the vote placements.

The second chart provides the total points, vote percentage and rank for each coach according to the captain, coach, and media vote categories (fan voting numbers are not released).

As with the best player voting, each category tends to vote similarly with winners ranked within the top three across the board. Winning a World Cup is a guarantee all three categories will align with their top votes. Same with Euro Championship winners though not any other continental championship winners. Coaches and teams within these competitions rarely crack the long list.

Interesting voting changes have started to happen in recent years. Chelsea head coach Emma Hayes is the first winner (2021) to nab the award based on domestic league results only. The results show a heavy split between the media votes and those of the coaches and captains, with the latter two favouring Hayes while the former group heavy favoured Lluís Cortés for Barcelona’s first Champions League victory. Curiously winning Canada’s first Olympic gold medal could only nab a fourth place finish for Bev Priestman whereas in 2016 and 2012 such an achievement was an award lock across the board.

Voting by Nominees

This is a fun one if you are interested in seeing the votes mapped globally. You can look by coach/nominee, by all or individual vote category, and by year.

The mapping shows all total votes attributed to a nominee regardless of ranking.

Voting by Country

This tab is a twist on the previous one, showing how each country voted each year.

Shortlist Rankings

This tab drills down further and allows for a compare / contrast of rankings across the vote categories by the country of the voter. For example, you can view how Germany coaches voted over the years or how the different categories voted in a specific year.

In case you were wondering at this point, coaches and captains are forbidden from voting for themselves, should they be on the nominee list. Their votes are invalidated if they do so.
